Towns of Grand County
Winter Park
Winter Park is approximately 9100 feet above sea level, and just 67 miles northwest
of Denver. It was originally named Hideaway Park, and it was a village that began in 1932.
Today, it is still a laid-back mountain community bounded on the east and south
by the Continental Divide and on the west by the Vasquez Mountains. Priding itself as
a year round resort, Grand County has something to offer everyone of its visitors.
From its lakes, forests, parks and wildlife to its world-class ski resort and
golf course, opportunities for adventure, exploration and discovery await around every corner.
Grand Lake
Grand Lake is a natural lake, one of the headwaters of the Colorado River in Grand County, Colorado.
On its shores is located the eponymous town of Grand Lake. The elevation of the lake surface is 2550 meters.
It is the largest natural lake in the state of Colorado, formed by the damming of several streams by a
glacial moraine. It is adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park, and the town often has moose or elk sightings.
Grand Lake offers breath taking views, world-class fishing, golf, sailboarding, and boating.
Take a stroll down the boardwalk and check out the local merchant shops, cafes, and restaurants.
There is also a historic community theater with live repertory performances and summer events.
Granby
Granby was founded in 1905 with the arrival of the original Moffat Railroad. The elevation of the town of Granby is 7,935 feet above sea level. The town was named after Granby Hiller, the U.S. District Attorney For Colorado. Within a year, the town had grown to consist of 30 dwellings, 2 livery barns, 2 hotels, 2 restaurants, a church, a schoolhouse, and 4 saloons.
